Tamil comics books are old Tamil-language comic stories published traditionally in book formats. A home-made Tamil comic, "It's a whole world of fun" was made by Gauri for her son. Tamil comic stories are often read out to children before bedtime or during the rainy season, thereby doubling up as both stories and lullabies. The first "modern" Tamil comics were published by the Tamil Lexicon company in 1935, who coined the term 'Kadhal Kooli' (Love Stories) to describe their product. They ran until 1962, with 219 issues being published throughout that time frame. Some of these comics were also serialized on All India Radio at one point. The earliest established Tamil comic companies were M.R.L. Publications (1962–93) and Ramanand Magazine (1961–2005) followed by Nagaraja Comics in 2006, which prints comic strips based on Indian folklore, myths and epics. The term "Kadhal Kooli" has been used since to describe Tamil comic books, and the Kodambakkam cultural complex in Chennai is the site of a publishing house specializing in them. The earliest published Tamil comic stories, such as "Palm Leaf Love Stories" (1935), were influenced by European comics and magazines, but by the 1980s they had evolved into a distinct style with a completely different format and audience. Tamil comic books are also typically very short in comparison to longer English-language comics. From the 1980s onward, they have been produced mainly in small editions or in smaller shorter sized comics that cannot be produced at a commercial level by large publishing houses. In the late 1980s and 1990s, comic artists from Erode and Coimbatore were especially prominent in the Tamil comic book industry. In Tamil Nadu, comics have been used as a medium of instruction through the school library system. In 1997, a school library in Kanchipuram run by Vatsala Kumaran took to providing comic books as a form of entertainment to pupils during school breaks. After receiving positive feedback from both teachers and parents about how this was particularly helping children who had weak reading comprehension skills as well as those who failed to pay attention in class, Vatsala Kumaran began organizing special drives to provide comics catering to subjects such as health awareness and anti-littering messages.
