What is Skyfall? Skyfall is a 2012 spy film, the twenty-third in the James Bond film series produced by Eon Productions. It was directed by Sam Mendes and written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. It features Daniel Craig in his third performance as James Bond, and Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva, the villain. In Skyfall, Bond's loyalty to M is put in question when her past comes back to haunt her. Bond must track down and defeat Silva before he hurts anyone else; but the secret agent isn't without some help along the way - one of them being Eve (played by Naomie Harris), who previously worked alongside him on assignment. The film premiered at the Royal Albert Hall on 23 October 2012 and was released in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2012 and the United States on 9 November 2012. It was the first James Bond film to be screened in IMAX venues, although it was not filmed with IMAX cameras. The film received positive reviews, with many critics regarding it as one of the series' best films, and was also a commercial success. It became the thirteenth highest-grossing film of all time, the second highest-grossing film in Britain (surpassed by "Avatar"), the highest-grossing film in the series since 2002's "Die Another Day", and the seventh-highest grossing film worldwide ever. The film received eight nominations at the 85th Academy Awards, with its chief nomination coming in the Best Sound Editing category, where it went on to win. The story begins with James Bond (Daniel Craig) in a meeting with M (Naomie Harris) at MI6 headquarters addressing his role in MI6's current operations. After M questions his loyalty, he replies that he is known for his loyalty and they continue their briefing. Nearby, they are unaware that their conversation is being listened in on by Silva (Javier Bardem), who had previously interrogated Bond for information during the events of "Casino Royale". Silva is revealed to be the leader of an international criminal organization known as Quantum, and is responsible for a wave of bombings conducted by their agents. M orders Bond to stop Silva while she gives him control of MI6's Section C, which includes all its field operatives; however Bond soon receives orders from M to kill Silva. The story shifts back and forth between London and Shanghai, where Bond and Eve (Naomie Harris), a British agent employed by MI6 for her hacking abilities, are on a mission to find Dr. White (Ben Whishaw), who they believe may hold answers on how Silva's organization was able to acquire the plans for a nuclear missile silo in China. As they progress in the investigation, Bond and Eve are given permission to carry on with their affair; however, when they return to his apartment, he receives a call that he must leave immediately. While leaving the apartment, Bond is ambushed by Q (Ben Whishaw), who helps him evade Silva's men. Q tells him the plane he is on has been intercepted by a drone belonging to Silva. After evading more of his pursuers, Bond and Eve attempt to get into a plane but are stopped by Q again.
